Birth Doula Support

It All Starts with a Free Consultation

This is a chance for us to meet over a cup of coffee or your favourite tea and discuss how you envision your upcoming birth, and what doula support might look like for your growing family. Just as every pregnancy and birth is unique so is every doula--ideally, the doula you hire should be one that you "click with" on a personal level, and this meeting is an opportunity to get to know each other and determine if I am the right doula to add to your birth team. Bring any questions you might have, of course.

2-3 Prenatal Visits

During the latter half of your pregnancy we will schedule for 2-3 prenatal visits together. Each prenatal visit will be approximately two hours in length, in your home, preferably with you and your partner (if available). The first prenatal is generally best to schedule sometime between your 30th-33rd week of pregnancy, and the second visit sometime between your 34th-37th week. We will add a third visit at 40 weeks if you go past your estimated due date. These prenatal visits allow us to better determine how I can support you and your birth preferences, practice various hands-on techniques for coping with the sensations of labour, and talk openly about any emotions you may be feeling.  Please do not feel that you must host me in a perfectly spotless and organized home--your house is allowed to look lived in--let it be your comfortable sanctuary, however that looks and feels to you is fine by me.

During Labour

Though full term is considered 37 weeks gestation, from the signing of the contract onwards I will make every effort to attend your birth when you go into labour, regardless of when your estimated due date is. Please let me know when you think you may be in early labour, and I will make my way to you when you are ready for me to join you, whether that is in your home or at the hospital. As a doula there are no shift-changes, and I will be present as a continual support to you and your family until up to two hours after the birth. I like to see you settled in and comfortable, with your newborn fed, before I take my leave.

Breastfeeding/Bottle-feeding Support

I am happy to offer feeding support, breast or bottle, once your newborn has arrived. Care-providers and hospital staff in Nanaimo and Duncan are generally able to offer and encourage breastfeeding support, and I am willing to also suggest possible guidance after the birth or during our postpartum visits.

Postpartum Visits

I include two postpartum visits in my doula services, each an hour long and in your home. During these visits we can discuss your birth experience, talk openly about how you feel as a newborn-parent, and I can offer feeding support. I am still available to provide support via phone/text or email until the end of our contract at six weeks postpartum.

Lending Library, Spinning Babies & Mindful Movement

All my Doula clients have access to my ever-growing lending library. I have a selection of books about pregnancy, labour/birth, postpartum, breastfeeding, and newborn care.

November 2017 I attended the Spinning Babies workshop at Mothering Touch in Victoria, and have been thrilled to bring what I learned into my doula practice. Spinning Babies aims to make pregnancy more comfortable, with shorter and easier labours for the birthing parent, by working with the body's physiology/ligaments and promoting better fetal positioning.

In April 2018 I attended MokSana’s 20hr Pre & Post Natal Yoga Teacher Training, which was created specifically as an offering for Midwives and Doulas who wished to speak about mindful movement during pregnancy. I went on in September of 2018 to complete my 200hr Yoga Teachers Training with OmTown, in Nanaimo, and began teaching prenatal and postnatal yoga classes at the Matraea Centre in February 2019. I am always open to sharing my knowledge and love of yoga with my Doula clients, and have been honoured to teach my classes in the Cowichan Valley.

Community Referrals

Considering placenta encapsulation, birth pool rentals, prenatal classes, maternity/birth/newborn photography, or sibling/Postpartum Doula services? Let me know, as a previous member of the Mid-Island Doulas collective, and a deep believer in the importance of working “in-community” with various prenatal/postnatal-geared businesses, I can generally offer referrals.

Offering Birth-Work & Reproductive Wellness in Community with Other Practitioners

It is a privilege & an honour to serve families in the Cowichan Valley (including: Mill Bay, Cowichan Bay, Shawnigan Lake, Cobblehill, Lake Cowichan , Duncan, Maple Bay, Crofton, Chemainus, and Ladysmith) and Nanaimo.  I am familiar with attending births at both the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital and Cowichan District Hospital, and grateful for my professional relationships with the Old City Midwives, Matraea Midwives, and Cowichan Midwifery Collective; and all the nurses, doctors, OBGYNs and paediatricians.

My professional relationships with various Birth and Postpartum Doulas throughout the mid-island are deeply meaningful to me, and I truly believe that working as a community means that together we are able to support the families we serve to the best of our collective abilities.

Over the course of 2020 Samara Ferguson of WyldFern Doula Care and I have begun to work in partnership with each other to serve our Cowichan Valley clients. She is a full-spectrum Doula who specializes in Postpartum, but is experienced as a Birth Doula and a Loss & Bereavement Doula also. She has her Level 1 in Reiki, and is a Pre-approved Postpartum Doula for the BCAAFC Doulas for Aboriginal Families Grant Program (DAFGP).   When we team up we call our partnership “WyldRose.”

You do not need to be a signed Fertility Doula client to be able to book Reiki or Reflexology sessions with me. You are also able to add additional reiki/reflexology sessions to any of my Fertility Support packages for yourself, or your partner.
